Tuscarora Rd., Crystal Bay, NV

This view shows the curved counter and cabinets that back up to the curved stairway as well as the custom trusses that give volume and character to the second floor.

The unique flat Crystal Bay lot leads up to the large welcoming front porch which is covered by the curved large second floor deck.

Breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe can be seen from many rooms including the glass enclosed shower and tub in this second floor master bathroom.

The curved stairwell with custom interior water feature is a relaxing yet unique greeting for visitors as they enter the residence.

Here the continuation of the curved stair wall is shown at the second floor. The opening above shows more of the custom trusses, as well as the ability for the residences heat to transfer throughout the second floor and cooling to occur from the vented skylights above.

The stone fireplace surround accents the custom roof trusses as you exit the living room toward the openings that look below to the water feature with curved stair well to the right and below to the entry to the left.

This residence had the unique start of a clean slate and being a
complete new construction project as the existing home was demolished and removed by a previous owner.

The 2 story 10 ft wide addition is blended into the existing house by matching the stone and the roof line. Adding dormers to the house that match the addition also helps.

The shed roof over the entry porch and the dormers on each side keeps the snow away from the house and stairs for better winter use and function.

The mater bedroom with a deck opens up in the back with light and views of the lake that are an appreciated contrast from the original home.

The new dormer above brings light into the original living room with the original windows and fireplace. The log collar ties remain in place.

The original front door remains with its unique hardware and the original bedroom over the dining room remains. The new dormer adds space and light.

A very efficient stair was fit into a small back area to access the upstairs so that the old stairs could be removed to provide a more open living area and a balcony to continue to the master addition.

The original chinked log interior walls add warmth and character to the kitchen.

Reconfiguration of the back entrances to the old kitchen and removal of the wall and stairs between the living room and kitchen provide for an open functional family area.

This quaint master suite has a fireplace, a 2 story closet and access to more storage over the old roof in the back of the house. A great use of space.

This tight bedroom area was opened up as a loft to the living room below to bring more light and space into the living room. The built in book shelves are a good use of the attic shape space.

440 Highway 28, Crystal Bay, NV

Update:
This residence has received a TRPA Best in the Basin 2009 award for
Best Residential Modification

The garage and office structure were designed and built prior to the remodel of the home and the roof line mimics the front of the original home which stayed similar. The garage door is custom built to look like two doors for a quaint human scale, but it actually one door for easy function.

The entry walk was raised 16 in. from the original to allow better function inside and out. Indirect light washes the large trims and lapsiding.

Pre-cut knee braces placed below the outlooker are an inexpensive way to add interest and dimension. The triple fascia with curved ends ties to curved knee braces and doors.

The old concrete stairs were covered with stone and the original chimney cap was put on the home after the existing masonry fireplace was clad with cultured stone (the only material that would not over load the existing structure).

The lakeside glazing maximizes the views and passive solar gain. There is a separate guest unit with its own entrance and bathroom below the house.

The living space is intimate yet light and open at the same time. The structure has curves cut in large collar ties to add interest at a low cost.

The kitchen has custom stepped cabinets, butcher block bar/eating surface of mesquite, antiqued stone counters and leaded German rolled glass. The opening between the living room and kitchen was widened to provide a flow functionally & visually.

The loft over the library adds a new perspective on the space and yet provides for a warm cozy library feel below by the double-sided gas fireplace. The other side of the fireplace is a warm greeting when you enter the house from the main entrance.

The master bedroom has views from Incline Village down to heavenly. A small portion of the original floor was removed and the new extension was lowered a foot to provide a 9 ft ceiling.

The gas fireplace on a thermostat provides instant heat for getting the chill out quickly in evening or morning. The custom mirror pocket door provides a useful attractive access to the closet.

The master bath is partially open to the master bedroom with views and fireplace but the stone trim provides a special separation.

The office has east, southeast exposure and acid stained concrete slab cut and grouted to look like large tiles. It soaks in the heat in the morning to radiate during the afternoon and night thus almost eliminating the need for the hydronic heat that is in the slab.
